All singers and instrumentalists were welcome, and about 50 turned up, including a well-balanced assembly of singers and six instrumentalists. The majority of those attending had not sung West Gallery music before, so the workshop fulfilled one purpose in bringing the genre to the attention of some new singers and players.

The second purpose was to prepare a concert. All the music below was rehearsed twice, and a concert prepared, with readings and explanations of the history and background of West Gallery music interspersed between the nine musical items. Having had about 110 minutes of rehearsal time with a scratch ensemble, the renditions were not always perfect, but the audience seemed to enjoy themselves. Many CDs and books were sold, and there was talk of another workshop in two years' time. A third purpose was fulfilled as £400 was raised for the church's restoration fund.
