The list below is of twenty pieces which I hope that we shall perform in Valkenburg. It is not set in stone, and I am posting it now (November 2011) in case anyone wishes to make suggestions or comments. I am aiming to perform about twelve of these pieces at each of our two concerts. Thus about four items will be recycled. If we find that we cannot cope with all twenty, then we shall simply leave some out and recycle more. I intend also to include some suitable readings and a band item.
In choosing these I have tried to balance all the following considerations:
- Including plenty of familiar pieces;
- Covering the whole time span of the WG period;
- Balancing plain/florid; major/minor; cheerful/mournful; lively/peaceful;
- Including reasonable proportions of psalms, hymns, carols and anthems;
- Avoiding lengthy or complex pieces , or those with elaborate instrumental parts;
- Limiting the number of tenor-led pieces, as we are light on tenors.
So if you wish to make a suggestion for including a particular piece, please state which similar piece you would like left out to make room for it. For example, if you think that we must at all costs include Gibraltar, perhaps we should leave out Birmingham. Unless of course you feel that I have got the balance all wrong, in which case please say so.
In the attached list:
The title is always the first few words of text. Some pieces may be known by other names.
The text shows the author or other source of the text.
The tune shows one name (possibly of several) by which the tune is known.
The composer is given, where known.
Under voices, the letters s a t b refer to soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices respectively, the air-bearing part being in upper case.
The references are to West Gallery Harmony Psalms and Hymns (RB=red book) and Carols and Celebration (GB=green book); to Praise and Glory (PG); and to Your Voices Raise (YVR). Numbers refer to pages.
Clicking on S will bring up a Sibelius Scorch file, which you can listen to as well as downloading and printing; there is more information about these here.
Clicking on pdf will bring up a downloadable and printable pdf file.
The editions are all my own. As my sources are not usually the same as those of RB, GB or PG, there may be differences from a version that you know. In several cases the text is different. Please start practising these at home as soon as you wish. You can contact me at francis.roads@gmail.com
or 020 8505 4381. Please report any apparent errors. And I shall apply the old principle that silence is consent; this is your trip, so please say if I can do anything to make it more enjoyable. |
