‘Twas on that dark, that doleful night

This anonymous tune is from the Colby manuscripts, penned in the early years of the 19th Century in the Isle of Man by the singing teacher William Shepherd. He used it as a setting for Psalm 70 NV, but here it is set to a Communion hymn of Isaac Watts. As is nearly all of Shepherd's music, it is tenor led. A soprano led version is available from the main Metrical Psalms list.
